Open Studio Day at Istanbul Residency Program
27 June 2009 / Saturday 2 pm. - 6 pm.
Katherine Hymers: Platform Garanti 3rd floor, Studio no:5 14:00-14:15 Time is a leitmotif underscoring much of Hymers work, heightened by the use of carefully framed, composed images and a refusal of the conventions of plot and narrative within the moving image. For Platform Garanti’s Open Studio Day Hymers will present a work in progress, Untitled (Abandon). It is a double screen video that brings together two independent images, captured in Istanbul, to create a sense of implied narrative, without explicitly detailing any narrative for the viewer. Instead, movement, or a lack of movement, are used in order to create a tension that makes palpable the elapse of time; exposing the contradiction between presence and absence between the two given images, whilst simultaneously encouraging the viewer to read these images as a whole.
Can Altay: Platform Garanti 3rd floor, Studio no:4 14:20-14:35 Having shared the same residency period at Platform Garanti, Altay is involved in a collaborative project with Jeremiah Day. They've presented fractured investigation of the city and the flows (of populations, commodities, waterways) that come together in the popular but semi-legal and often dangerous food of stuffed mussels. The mussels themselves, known as the “kidneys of the Bosphorus,” chemically filtering the waterway, absorbing traces of pollution, are found by Altay and Day to filter and absorb all kinds of other, more abstract, traces.
Frenchmottershead: Platform Garanti 3rd floor, Studio no:3 14:40-14:55 Rebecca French and Andrew Mottershead create art work that specifically explores ideas of identity, social ritual and the everyday public and private realms in which they are played out. They are currently undertaking international research in cities in Brazil, China, UK and Europe for SHOPS, an ongoing photographic project to uncover communities formed by selected local independent retailers. It includes residencies, public artworks, performance, exhibition and a publication planned for late 2009.
Stefanos Tsivopoulos: Platform Garanti 4th floor, Studio no:1&2 15:00-15:15 “My films characterized by the use of archives and cinematography as means of exploring issues of History and Politics. My new project “As Others Continue to Fall” puts forward the question over the familiarity of society with its inherited monuments. The word monument comes from the Latin "monere" which means 'to remind' or 'to warn'.So, what happens when monuments are not made to remind us of a historical event rather to warn us over the abuse of political power?”
Hans Rosenström: Platform Garanti 4th floor, Studio no:3 15:20-15:35 Hans Rosenström presents a project recently done in Hasankeyf, where he let a camera float freely on the Tigris. The natural current of the river transports the camera through the city, creating an own dramaturgy by its pace and making the river portray the landscape by its terms. The video shows an area transformed through a long period of time where the natural and cultural formations are closely entwined with each other. Transformation is an ongoing process and the video also tells the story of a river that is about to change its pace and a city that is to be flooded underneath its surface. Asli Cavusoglu: Platform Garanti 4th floor, Studio no:4 15:40-15:55 Aslı Çavuşoğlu will present her recent works. Dünyayı Nasıl Dolaştım? (How did I travel the world?) is a video including found footage materials from tour programs edited by the artist herself. William Blake okudum (I read William Blake) is an originalfolk song from Black Sea region, lyrics written by the artist and recorded by night club musicians. Dünya saati (World Watch) ve Hiçbirşey İstemeyen Adam (The man who wants anything) are two hand-made books. Alina Viola Grumiller: Platform Garanti 4th floor, Studio no:5 16:00-16.15 Alina Viola Grumiller will present a work in progress entitled City Dialogues which is transcriptions gathered from sound recordings of conversations the artist has had with people in Vienna, New York and Istanbul. These writings have over the course of her stay at Platform been transcribed and put into a format and will complete as a script for a narrative video or in the format of a book.
Emre Hüner Platform Garanti 5th floor, Studio no:3 16:20-16:35 “I am currently in the middle of a research for my new work including a lot of reference points from American and Russian culture, literature and cinema focusing mainly in the cold war era. The work is connected with propaganda movies, architecture and science. I'm mainly interested in NASA space programmes, Walt Disney cartoons, world fairs, Hollywood sci-fi cult movies of the 80s. During this process I've been doing an extensive online research using keywords in archives of images, books , magazines and films and collection materials that sometimes become starting points for my work.”
Karolin Fişekçi: Platform Garanti 5th floor, Studio no:4 16:40-16:55 Fisekci will present her paintings executed during the residency period.
